Show Notes

Jake and Ron welcome legendary author Christopher Paolini!

Even if you don't read genre fiction, you're likely to remember the story of the young man who at the age of nineteen became a New York Times bestselling author when his first book
Eragonwas republished by Knopf in 2003, after a self-published debut and a grassroots marketing campaign the previous year. Paolini would go on to produce three more novels and a short story collection tied to his Inheritance Cycle, with another, Murtagh, due this coming November.

Since 2002, Paolini has enthralled tens of millions of readers. And while the Inheritance Cycle is published as Young Adult fiction by Knopf, it is enjoyed by readers of all ages. This rabid fan base has earned him a citation in the Guinness Book of World Records as the youngest author of a bestselling series.

In 2020 Tor published Paolini's first science fiction novel,
To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, launching the Fractalverse series to much critical acclaim, including a GoodRead's Best Science Fiction Award for the year. A follow-up was published online in 2021 as Unity, and you can read it on fractal verse.net free of charge. The journey is interactive in a mode old people like us used to call hyper-fiction.

Not content with publishing one novel in 2023, Paolini this month brings us
Fractal Noise, a prequel novel written for adults that we dare say is of a philosophical bent. We mean this as the highest praise: Fractal Noise is thoughtful and thought-provoking, exploring themes of the nature of human suffering and its possible antidotes, loss and grief, and human endurance. That it does so with a gripping narrative suffused with an abiding sense of dread is a testament to Paolini's ever-growing skills as an author, and Fractal Noise is amongst our favorite novels of the iOtians's current interview season. We spoke with Paolini at his home in Montana and found him to be no less fascinating in person than he is on the page.
